The Complex Causes of Autism: Webinar Series

Page Published on: 4/15/2026

What causes autism? In Autism New Jersey’s original webinar series, Rutgers researchers broke down the science in simple terms. Our three-part series in May 2025 featured expert insights into the environmental factors that may contribute to autism, differences in brain structure among individuals with autism, and the genetics behind it all. Our follow-up webinar in April 2026 brought those three experts back to answer more of your questions.

We had more than 1,500 registrants and 860 active participants for our original three-part series, a testament to the interest in this topic among the New Jersey autism community. Our follow-up Q&A drew more than 700 registrants and 450 attendees. This series is part of an ongoing dialogue. All of the questions asked by attendees are added to our ongoing database of causes-related questions for future sessions.

PART 1

Genetic Causes of Autism with Dr. M. Chiara Manzini

Dr. M. Chiara Manzini, an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, presents on the genetic causes of autism. She brings her important real world experience from her work at Rutgers where she studies the link between human genetics and disorders like autism.

PART 2

Environment Cause of Autism with Dr. Alycia Halladay

Dr. Alycia Halladay, an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Rutgers University, presents on the environmental factors that may contribute to autism. As Chief Science Officer at the Autism Science Foundation, Dr. Halladay is known for making complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging for all audiences.

PART 3

The Impact on Brain Structures with Dr. Emanuel DiCicco-Bloom

Dr. Emanuel DiCicco-Bloom, a professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at Rutgers University, shares the latest research on individuals with autism and differences in brain structure. He brings extensive expertise to the topic, serving on several scientific panels focused on autism and neurological disorders.

More of Your Questions Answered
