More Resources
While many siblings of individuals with autism develop empathy, strength, and maturity, they may also experience feelings that are harder to talk about, such as confusion, jealousy, or a pressure to take on significant responsibilities. Early on, their needs can unintentionally take a back seat as parents focus on managing medical appointments, therapies, and challenging behavior. Later, siblings worry about what the future will hold for them and their siblings as their parents age.
Without dedicated space to process these experiences, siblings may struggle to understand their role in the family, express their emotions, or find others who relate to their situation. Many siblings feel alone and lack meaningful, relevant connections with peers.
When siblings are given opportunities to learn about autism in age-appropriate ways, connect with peers who share similar experiences, and build coping and communication skills, they are better equipped to navigate family dynamics and their own emotional well-being. Supporting siblings also strengthens the entire family system.
Creating Connections
At Autism New Jersey, we recognize that siblings are an essential part of the autism journey. We offer dedicated opportunities for siblings and their families designed to educate, create connections, and foster resilience. Our goal is to ensure that siblings feel supported and empowered, while reinforcing that their experiences matter and their voices deserve to be heard.
Sibling Connection Sessions offer adult siblings a chance to meet other siblings and receive peer support. Virtual sessions are facilitated by Director of Family Wellness, Amy Golden, M.S., BCBA, LBA, NBC-HWC a behavior analyst and health and wellness coach who is actively planning programs and collecting resources, specifically designed with you in mind.
