A new law strengthening protections for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across New Jersey will take effect on July 1, state officials announced.
The law, P.L. 2025, c.280, enhances oversight and accountability for developmental disability service providers and gives the Department of Human Services (DHS) additional tools to help protect individuals receiving services, including the authority to impose penalties for serious violations.
“Every individual receiving services deserves to be protected, respected and supported in a safe environment,” DHS Commissioner Dr. Stephen Cha said in the Department’s press release.
Autism New Jersey supported the measure throughout the legislative process and worked with policymakers, families, and providers to advance meaningful protections for individuals with disabilities. Former Governor Phil Murphy signed the bill in January 2026.
To help families, providers, and other stakeholders understand these important changes, Autism New Jersey has developed resources explaining the new law and its impact.
