Restraint and Seclusion Guidance for Students with Disabilities

September 21, 2018

The NJ Department of Education issued guidance regarding the new law that limits the use of restraint and seclusion. This law is designed to protect students from unwarranted restraint/seclusion, ensure proper parental notification, and document use of such procedures in order to analyze and improve educational practices. We encourage parents and professionals to reach out to us with any questions regarding this new law and its implementation.

In order to assist school districts and families who are working to come into compliance with the NJ Department of Education’s restraint and seclusion guidance, we have developed a reporting form that schools can use that meets all the requirements listed in the guidance. The form is a writable PDF that is meant to be completed electronically and can be customized with your schools information.

If you have any questions about the restraint and seclusion law or the reporting form, please email publicpolicy@autismnj.org or call 800.4.AUTISM.
