May 01, 2024
The 3rd Annual Shillelagh Plunge for Autism, held on Saturday, April 27th, transformed 16th Avenue in Belmar into a vibrant hub of support and unity, as over 200 individuals braved the chilly waters in honor of National Autism Acceptance Month. With sunny skies and the ocean temperature hovering at 50.5 degrees, the stage was set for a memorable event.
The day kicked off with a buzz of anticipation as attendees gathered at D’Jais for check-in, eager for the call to line up. Law enforcement representatives from across Monmouth County lent their presence, demonstrating their support for both the event and the autism community, their vehicles adorned with colorful autism awareness decals.
Led by the melodies of The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, Jersey Shore’s bagpipes, participants made their way down the boardwalk. Rousing speeches inspired the plungers, igniting their enthusiasm before they were guided to the ocean for the 1:00pm plunge.
Families, including children, embraced the opportunity to demonstrate their solidarity with New Jersey’s autism community, eagerly immersing themselves in the frigid waters. Cheers erupted from the crowd as participants emerged, their smiles testament to the joy of contributing to a meaningful cause.
The festivities continued as everyone reconvened at D’Jais for a post-plunge celebration, where the legendary sounds of The Holme Band, synonymous with the Jersey Shore, provided the perfect soundtrack for the occasion.
A heartfelt thank you to the Kelly Family, The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, Jersey Shore, and all who participated, contributing to the success of this wonderful day dedicated to autism acceptance and support!
