What is health and wellness coaching?

Health and wellness coaches partner with clients to identify their strengths and resources to make sustainable and healthy lifestyle behavior changes. They use a client-centered approach that allows participants to self-assess and develop their own goals based on their personal vision for health. During coaching sessions, participants will be introduced to strategies to promote motivation and positive habit-formation.

Why should I participate?

When was the last time you did something intentional for your own well-being? A holistic view of health and well-being encompasses many areas including: emotional well-being; fulfillment and purpose; nutrition; physical activity; sleep and your physical environment. There are no approaches that will work for everyone. What’s most important is making choices to engage in wellness practices that are realistic to implement and consistent with your personal values. It may not be reasonable to address personal goals in each of these areas right away, however taking some time to assess where you are at this moment can expand your awareness. Coaching can help you find ways to incorporate helpful strategies to get you started.

As a caregiver of a child with autism, it is understandable that your focus is usually on your child’s and family’s needs and supporting your own health and well-being may not always be a priority for you. Practicing self-care involves taking the time to engage in activities that improve your mental and physical health. While your caregiving responsibilities can be incredibly demanding, putting off caring for yourself can be detrimental to you and your family. Taking some small steps can be impactful and improve your quality of life.

What can I expect from coaching?

You will meet in a small group with other caregivers. Coaching will be facilitated by Amy Golden, M.S., BCBA, LBA, NBC-HWC, Autism New Jersey’s Director of Family Wellness. Amy is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and National Board Certified Health & Well-being Coach (NBC-HWC) with more than 25 years of experience working with families. Sessions will be interactive and include activities, discussion, and collaborative support.

What is the format?

Coaching sessions will take place in a small group virtual format. Group sessions will be limited to a maximum of 6 participants.

When will sessions be held?

Coaching sessions will take place at the same time each week at a time that is convenient for all participants. Sessions will be 1-1.5 hours in length. An introductory session will take place on week 1, and follow-up sessions will be held on weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Commitment to all 6 sessions is important for individual and group benefit.

The first coaching groups started in March 2024. Additional groups are being formed on a rolling basis, so participants can sign up at a time that is convenient for them.

Will I need to do anything between sessions?

Between sessions there will be brief assessments or exercises that will contribute to your coaching experience. Additionally, since health and wellness coaching is designed to help you establish and work toward your goals, attempting to make progress on your personal action steps will be encouraged.

What is the cost?
