Emerging Challenging Behavior Consultation for Young Children with Autism

Autism New Jersey is contracted by Children’s System of Care (CSOC) to provide consultation for young children with autism and emerging challenging behavior.

Children who are appropriate to refer to this consultation are:

  • Diagnosed with autism
  • Age 8 or younger
  • Exhibiting emerging challenging behavior (ECB) that is beginning to cause safety concerns (e.g., aggression, self-injury, property destruction, or elopement)
  • Not making meaningful progress in developing functional communication and leisure/social/adaptive skills that impact independence
  • Demonstrating behaviors that are physically manageable yet becoming more frequent and/or intense
  • Experiencing increasing difficulty in school/community participation
  • Impacted by sleep and/or dietary issues and health concerns are beginning to emerge

Referral Process

  • Obtain parent or guardian’s consent to have general, non-identifying information about their child shared via this parent/guardian consent form
  • Once parent or guardian consent for consultation is obtained, please submit a HIPAA-compliant online referral form
  • You will receive a response from a consultant within 3 business days
  • Requesting parties will be contacted by Autism New Jersey to learn more about the youth’s needs and an initial call will be scheduled.

How Autism New Jersey can help

  • Match care managers with experienced consultants

  • Conduct a service review to maximize services funded by others (e.g., educational entitlement, insurance, and Medicaid)

  • Provide expert clinical guidance, including advice on empirically validated treatments, best practices, and appropriateness of service

  • Collaborate to support the development of a clinically appropriate plan to improve safety and quality of life for youth and family members

  • Assist in navigating complex family and team dynamics
